STAR Method

The STAR method is a structure for answering competency interview questions: Situation, Task, Action, Result. You set the context, state your responsibility, describe what you specifically did, and end with a measurable outcome. It keeps answers concrete and prevents rambling, and works in both live and one-way recorded interviews.

Prepare a handful of STAR stories mapped to common competencies, leadership, conflict, failure, initiative, so you can adapt one to almost any question. In each answer, spend most of your time on the Action, what you personally did, and always close with a Result, ideally quantified. It is especially valuable in one-way video interviews, where you cannot read the interviewer and structure is what carries you. Preparing for the interview stage: expected salary and interview guide.
