Free Zone

A free zone is a designated UAE business jurisdiction with its own licensing and, historically, its own employment visa system separate from mainland MOHRE rules. Zones like DIFC, DMCC, and JAFZA employ large professional workforces, and which side an employer sits on affects visa processing and, in DIFC's case, the applicable employment law.

For job seekers the practical differences: free zone visas are sponsored through the zone authority rather than mainland channels, some zones (DIFC most notably) run their own employment law and even their own gratuity-replacement savings scheme, and recruiters searching for regulated-industry candidates use zone names as keywords. If you have worked in a zone, name it exactly, "DIFC" is a searched term in financial services recruitment the way "JAFZA" is in logistics. More on UAE keywords in the UAE CV guide.
