UAE CV Format: How to Write a CV for Dubai and Abu Dhabi Jobs

The UAE is the most competitive job market in the Gulf: high application volumes, heavy ATS usage across portals, and recruiters who spend seconds per CV because they can. That competition cuts both ways. Most applicants submit generic international CVs, so a properly localized UAE CV stands out immediately.

What goes at the top of a UAE CV

UAE recruiters expect a header that answers their three filter questions instantly: can you legally work, where are you, and how fast can you start.

  • Full name, mobile (+971 if in the UAE), professional email
  • Visa status: "Employment visa (transferable)," "Golden Visa holder," "Visit visa — immediate joiner," "Dependent visa — no sponsorship required." Each of these is a phrase recruiters literally search.
  • Location and mobility: "Dubai" or "Abu Dhabi, open to both"
  • Notice period: "Immediate joiner" is one of the most-searched terms in UAE recruitment; if it applies to you, say it in those words.
  • Nationality (standard practice in the UAE)
  • LinkedIn URL

Length, structure, and the one-page myth

Two pages is standard for most professionals. One page suits fresh graduates; three suits senior executives. Structure it as: header, professional summary tailored to the role, reverse-chronological experience with quantified results, education and certifications, skills and languages.

Write achievement bullets with numbers: "Grew key account revenue 23% (AED 8.4M) in FY2025." UAE hiring culture is commercial and outcome-driven; vague responsibility lists read as filler.

Photo or no photo

For anything submitted through a portal or company career site, skip the photo: it hurts ATS parsing and adds no value. UAE recruiters live on LinkedIn, so put the professional headshot there. The exception is industries where presentation is the product (hospitality front-of-house, aviation cabin crew, luxury retail), where a photo is often explicitly requested.

The keywords UAE recruiters search

Parsed CV databases in the UAE are searched with a predictable vocabulary. Use the terms that truthfully apply: "UAE experience," "GCC experience," "Dubai market," "immediate joiner," "transferable visa," free zone names if relevant (DIFC, DMCC, JAFZA), regulatory terms for your field ("UAE labor law," "VAT compliance," "DFSA regulations"), and exact tool and certification names from the posting. The mechanics of keyword matching are covered in our ATS guide.

Formatting rules

Everything in our ATS guide applies doubly in the UAE because portal usage is near universal: single column, standard headings, Arial or Calibri 10-12pt, text-based PDF or .docx, no tables, no icons, no skill bars, consistent date formats. If you cannot copy-paste clean text out of your CV, it is invisible.

Common UAE-specific mistakes

Applying from abroad without addressing it. If you are outside the UAE, say what you offer instead: "Relocating to Dubai in September 2026, available for video interviews immediately." Silence reads as friction.

Ignoring the salary expectations field. Many UAE portals require an expected salary. Enter a researched range, not a guess; our expected salary guide covers how to calculate one from base plus allowances.

Same CV for Dubai and Abu Dhabi government-linked roles. Abu Dhabi's government-linked entities skew more formal and increasingly value Arabic; Dubai's private sector is faster and more international. Tone your summary accordingly.

A 2019-style objective statement. "Seeking a challenging role in a dynamic organization" wastes your most valuable real estate. Replace it with a summary that mirrors the job posting's own language.
