Counteroffer

A counteroffer is when your current employer, on hearing you plan to resign, offers you more, higher pay, a promotion, or better terms, to keep you. It can be flattering and tempting, but it deserves a clear-eyed look, because the reasons you were leaving often remain after the money changes.

Weigh why you were leaving in the first place: if it was pay alone, a counteroffer might solve it, but if it was the role, manager, or growth, money rarely fixes that for long. Consider that accepting can change how your loyalty is viewed. Use any competing offer honestly, not as a bluff, and get any counteroffer in writing before acting on it.
